CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

GUNNER

Her lips tasted sweet as honey on mine and in that moment, I swore to the Old Ones, I coulda died a happy man.

Harper Ferenz wanted me as much as I wanted her.

What world did I even live in? I wasn’t sure, but I didn’t want to leave it.

But of course, all good things had to end, and our end came in the form of a bossy mage entering the snug lil’ haven Harper and I had hidden away in while the others ate lunch.

“There you are! Can you two stop sucking face for more than a minute so we can all talk?” Luca glared.

Dude was grumpy. It was enough to make the pleasure in havin’ Harper in my lap, my hands squeezing her hips, dampen. Had something happened?

She laughed. “Excuse me, but sucking face? Did Shay tell you to say that?”

Luca glowered. “No.”

Harper arched an eyebrow. I couldn’t help but notice how swollen her lips were. Swollen ‘cause I had indeed been suckin’ and lickin’ and kissing’ them for the better part of an hour. An hour that had felt like a dang minute.

“It may have rubbed off,” Luca sighed in concession. “We’ve all been spending too much time together.”

“The benefits of being cooped up in a manor.” She shifted in my lap, and I pulled her in closer, not wanting her to leave. “Meeting, you say?”

“I return from the Covenant bearing news,” Luca replied, his tone a touch tamer. “And everyone should be in on it.”

“We’ll be there,” Harper assured him.

That was all Luca needed. The mage left, and Harper turned toward me again. I sighed, lovin’ the sight of her, the feel of her—strong and also soft in all the right places—so close to me. “Lunch is almost up anyway. I can’t imagine the witches are going to let the Vindix have the afternoon off when they gave us a long lunch.”

“’Course not. We didn’t just save a city or anything yesterday.”

Harper smirked. “The only reason they’re even being lenient on me is because they’re getting to know Rhianna one on one, which I should be doing too instead of sucking face with you.”

“Why ain’t ya then?” I teased, though I didn’t want her to leave. The morning had been hard enough with buryin’ Silas. Though the fae had betrayed me, I still remembered the moments of friendship. I didn’t think they were fake, and I doubted I’d ever forget them.

She shook her head. “Guess I’m too easily swayed by a pretty face nowadays.” She leaned to kiss me again, fillin’ my nose with her delicious scent of apples and sunbaked earth, before risin’ and holdin’ out a hand. “Let’s go.”

My favorite she-wolf had to drag me from the snug and through the halls until we reached the meeting room with the large table and the tiny tree in the center.

Gems representing the lapis caelesti decorated the tree. My pack wasn’t there. They weren’t allowed in the war room, but they didn’t care. They much preferred to roam the grounds.
